CHAPTER 12

***ADAM***

Adam had seen little of Charlie since the night of the lighting ceremony, so it was no surprise when he arrived at the paper a few days later to find her office empty and the lights off. He was beginning to wonder if he’d pushed her too hard, if he should have kept his feelings to himself, if he’d misinterpreted what his magic was trying to tell him. It had happened before; he’d been so wrong, so blind by what he wanted that he hadn’t seen the truth, and it had almost cost him everything.

Reminding himself that he was older and wiser helped a little. If he was wrong, if Charlie wasn’t the woman he thought she was, there hadn’t been much harm done. He’d get over her as soon as she was gone, and life would return back to normal. The only problem was the cold spot in his middle when he envisioned the day she left.

“You look like you’re carrying the world’s problems on your shoulders,” Barbra said when she saw him. “What’s got you down? Please tell me it’s not Charlie.”

He shrugged his shoulders, “I think I’m just tired,” he said. “I don’t suppose you’ve seen her today?”

“No, I haven’t seen her, but you might want to look at the rough draft of the paper. She downloaded a story again this morning,” she said. “Today’s is about shopping in a small town, and she managed to hit the mark again; we’ll be sold out of papers before we lock the doors tonight.”

“Well, I guess I can’t really complain; our readership has gone back up to where it was before Waler died,” he said with a sigh. “I guess I’d better get to work. Maybe I’ll head upstairs after the paper goes to print, just to check on her.”

Barbra studied him for a second, “Either you need a vacation, or you’ve got it bad for that woman,” she said, shaking her head. “She’s a talented writer, and very beautiful, but she’s not exactly the small-town kind of girl. She’s going to move on, Adam. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“I know all that; Charlie has made it more than clear she has a life to get back to. The last thing I want to do is see either of us get hurt,” he said. “I’ve told myself over and over that it wouldn’t work, but I still end up back where I started, and it’s driving me crazy.”

After looking around the news room to make sure no one was listening, Barbra leaned forward. “You know, sometimes the only way to get rid of an itch is to scratch it,” she said, raising her eyebrows at him to see if he understood.

He was shocked at first, then couldn’t help but laugh, “Well, I sort of thought of that myself and suggested as much to Charlie, not exactly in those words, of course,” he said, shaking his head. “All it did was earn me this disappearing act.”
